What would you like to say about yourself
Over the years I've been a journalist, specialist in regeneration partnership and community engagement, and social media. I'm now tying the experience together as a social reporter: someone who uses that mix as a way of facilitating conversations and surfacing stories for collaboration. It may be around events, in localities or organisations, or across networks.
More about social reporting on my blog and at the socialreporting toolbox.
I recently co-authored a handbook about the use of social technology for social benefit, funded by NESTA. The content of Social by Social is is available here, and can be copied and reused with attribution.
I worked for UK online centres in setting up this network, with Dave Briggs, around the National Digital Inclusion Conference.
I'm now focussing here on how social technology can be used in local community development: if you are interested in that, do please join the local communities group.

Digital Inclusion ten years ago

Looking back at old site of mine, I came across a A manifesto for online communities, written by a group of us back in 1999, and published by the BBC as part of its Webwise campaign. It's a sort of early unofficial digital inclusion plan. Here's the summary. (I've written a longer post

Closing this network

Hi all

Earlier in the year I was engaged by UK online centres to develop and facilitate this digitalengagement network, so that we could report and follow through from the National Digital Inclusion Conference this summer. Thanks everyone for such terrific content.

My contract came to an end some months back, and there haven't been any offers of funding to maintain and facilitate the network. I'm now putting effort into developing the SocialContinue

Local communities workshop September 21

We can now offer full details of the workshop being organised by DCLG and the Social by Social team in London on September 21, when programme leaders inside and outside government will get together with practitioners to discuss the use of social tech at local level.
We plan to do some mapping of who is doing what, and then generate some lively discussion about what national programmes can offer - and what help people running local communities and blogs need.
Even if you can't get to the workshop… Continue

Government offers to convene local communities workshops

I started up a group on this site because of interest in "hyperlocal" - the use of social tech to help people find a voice and generally do good stuff locally. That got some quick support, and in order to give us the functions we need I've now created new Ning local communities network. Do come and join us - you can use the same login as this site.… Continue

Local stories make the case for digital whatever

A trip yesterday to Stoke-on-Trent reminded me yet again that it's the way that individuals and groups make use of free, simple tools that brings to life the case for digital inclusion, digital mentors, digital Britain, hyperlocal ... whatever. It really shows how you can do good stuff with new stuff. The occasion was a pilot workshop run by… Continue

Hi David,
Thank you for your message. I hope you are well.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing you on the 18th again and to get your feedback on our work. I will be posting more things about the results on the blog before the event...

Thanks for the welcome. Communities 2.0 is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative which aims to tackle digital exclusion. We're going to do this over the next 6 years by working closely with community and voluntary groups to help them develop 'digital inclusion initiatives'. Hope to tell you lots more about what's going on in Wales as it happens.

Hi David, thanks for inviting me to join the site. Hopefully once W14london is standing on four feet rather than three I will take part in the site.

Many thanks Annette Albert

Hi David
Thanks! Nick Booth's invited me to that as well. Just need to ask work for time off, which I'm not sure will be easy with people on summer breaks and all. I'll try my damndest to be there! :-)
Cheers, Nicky.

Absolutely. I think it will help as a place to draw everything together, from which stuff can be extracted for further exploration on the blog.

I don't think groups can be private other than in terms of who can post to them - ie everyone can see they exist and what content in in them. I vote we make it all as open as possible!
