Having been to National Digital Inclusion for the last three years I'm looking for something that's grounded in people's experience. I accept that we have to have the politics, the funders have to have their day and the funded have to show progress…

David, Many thanks for this. Regrettably it clashes with something else, which is a shame because I would really have liked to attend. However, I will contribute and look out for the results with great interest. Exciting stuff - eh?

Agree with this post, we must get the infrastructure right and everything else will follow. Half the country at present has such a poor connection it doesn't stimulate the digitally disengaged. There is no incentive to join because everything is so…

Hi Claire Many thanks for taking the time to respond to my provocative comments. While I don't think we disagree on the fundementals I do think we disagree on what we mean by stimulating demand and building capacity. My view of stimulating demand is…

"Giving people skills and giving people access! What about stimulating demand, what about building capacity?" Could they not be seen as a similar thing? 'Giving' may be the wrong word, but in my experience spending some direct time with someone sho…

It’s self evident, you can’t have a knowledge economy without a knowledge society. Call it social justice, call it what you will but the fact remains that a knowledge economy on its own is unsustainable and really only serves the few. While I see th…

This response is going to come in parts. There are some things that are immediate, and some that need a bit of research and reflection. What David is talking about reflects the enormity of the changes which we are experiencing. It's a personal view,…

What do we expect from NDI10?

Having been to National Digital Inclusion for the last three years I'm looking for something that's grounded in people's experience. I accept that we have to have the politics, the funders have to have their day and the funded have to show progress but unlike three year's ago digital inclusion is much more mainstream.

This is an opportunity to meet, greet and share. I'm looking not just for successes I'm looking for lesson's learrned. Who achieved great outcomes for individuals

Losing Faith - Hopefully a temporary blip!

"Nous (pronounced /ˈnuːs/, Greek: νοῦς or νόος) is a philosophical term for mind or intellect. Outside of a philosophical context, it is used, in English, to denote "common sense," with a different pronunciation (/naʊs/).” – Wikipedia.

One of my many faults is that I have no political nous. I am devoid of nous. Despite long years in local government, no nous! It explains, perhaps, why I’m more practical in nature, a doer, an organiser but not a political animal. That doesn’t mean that I don’t h… Continue

Digital Inclusion - The Infrastructure Debate - Random Jottings

I picked up a "Tweet" today from an academic in Boston MA called Danah Boyd who Tweets under the name of zephoria. Although they have the equivalent of our Carter Report, who's Implementation plan was publicised in timely fashion by Chris yesterday (I would never have found it!), called the National Broadband Plan they are still thinking through how it might impact on Education. Danah Boyd put out a call for peopl's thoughts and ideas which are being posted… Continue

What is Core?

The suggestion in the Twitterverse that Here was a "core" offer for digital inclusion has started a bit of a discussion.

My instant response was that I didn't see what was "core" about it. Paul Webster's challenge was, I suppose, to define "Core". Gut response? Fill in an online job application, the rest, is backfilling. By this, I mean that "core" is what you need "now" and if we are talking the last 29% then what you need now isn't… Continue

Going Euro!

Did you get very wet this weekend? I stayed in and did stuff, however, it was an opportunity to catch up with this and that. I took time out to go Euro and spent some time on the ePractice site. The view of eInclusion is very different 20 miles over the channel and beyond. I'm not sure what inspired me - probably the lack of articles about social capital and communities and real people - so I penned a few words, borrowing from things I'd already done and posted it.

For the record it got 75 read… Continue
