David Wilcox Digital Inclusion ten years ago

Looking back at old site of mine, I came across a A manifesto for online communities, written by a group of us back in 1999, and published by the BBC as part of its Webwise campaign. It's a sort of early unofficial digital inclusion plan. Here's the summary. (I've written a longer post

Paul Nash What do we expect from NDI10?

Having been to National Digital Inclusion for the last three years I'm looking for something that's grounded in people's experience. I accept that we have to have the politics, the funders have to have their day and the funded have to show progress but unlike three year's ago digital inclusion is much more mainstream.

This is an opportunity to meet, greet and share. I'm looking not just for successes I'm looking for lesson's learrned. Who achieved great outcomes for individuals

David Wilcox Local communities workshop September 21

We can now offer full details of the workshop being organised by DCLG and the Social by Social team in London on September 21, when programme leaders inside and outside government will get together with practitioners to discuss the use of social tech at local level. We plan to do some mapping of who is doing what, and then generate some lively discussion about what national programmes can offer - and what help people running local communities and blogs need. Even if you can't get to the workshop… Continue

Paul Nash Losing Faith - Hopefully a temporary blip!

"Nous (pronounced /ˈnuːs/, Greek: νοῦς or νόος) is a philosophical term for mind or intellect. Outside of a philosophical context, it is used, in English, to denote "common sense," with a different pronunciation (/naʊs/).” – Wikipedia. One of my many faults is that I have no political nous. I am devoid of nous. Despite long years in local government, no nous! It explains, perhaps, why I’m more practical in nature, a doer, an organiser but not a political animal. That doesn’t mean that I don’t h… Continue

David Wilcox Government offers to convene local communities workshops

I started up a group on this site because of interest in "hyperlocal" - the use of social tech to help people find a voice and generally do good stuff locally. That got some quick support, and in order to give us the functions we need I've now created new Ning local communities network. Do come and join us - you can use the same login as this site.… Continue

David Wilcox Local stories make the case for digital whatever

A trip yesterday to Stoke-on-Trent reminded me yet again that it's the way that individuals and groups make use of free, simple tools that brings to life the case for digital inclusion, digital mentors, digital Britain, hyperlocal ... whatever. It really shows how you can do good stuff with new stuff. The occasion was a pilot workshop run by… Continue

Alex Tovar Managing beyond web 2.0 - Article from McKinsey Quarterly

Hello all. I found this interesting article that explains a model called LEAD (Listen, Experiment, Apply, Develop) for digital and social media interaction. The article is from McKinsey Quarterly - July edition. Hope you enjoy it. It’s hardly news that the Internet has evolved into the primary vehicle for communication, information, and commerce. But in a surprising twist, today’s online customers—as both producers and consumers of their own content and services—ferociously… Continue

David Wilcox Anyone else working on local community sites?

The blog posts today from Jo Crumplin and David Barrie confirm for me the growing interest in using blog and Ning sites for local communities. Anyone else working on that front? Is this something we should look at in more depth on this network? The RSA is running a day's session on July 10… Continue

Jo Crumplin How Ning can help pull communities together

Just read Chris's blog - What I think about Twitter, which promted me to right my very first blog (so bear with me). Since first coming across Ning earlier this year, we immediately realised how it could work as a connection tool, our first and most successful creation is the Pegswood Ning. Linking the Centre, the various groups that use it and centre users together in what I call in interactive newspaper. As quick as a flash, when Margaret's third child was born (this is a very brave lady who s… Continue

David Wilcox Where do we talk about all this?

Despite there being so much still to do on digital inclusion - as Helen Milner summarises here - it's easy to forget how far we've come over the past decade. However, I wonder if we are in danger… Continue

Paul Nash Going Euro!

Did you get very wet this weekend? I stayed in and did stuff, however, it was an opportunity to catch up with this and that. I took time out to go Euro and spent some time on the ePractice site. The view of eInclusion is very different 20 miles over the channel and beyond. I'm not sure what inspired me - probably the lack of articles about social capital and communities and real people - so I penned a few words, borrowing from things I'd already done and posted it. For the record it got 75 read… Continue

Paul Webster The Empty Room Syndrome

That's the thing about Twitter, you just never know where comments and conversations will lead, or how sometimes you pick up on a Tweet and follow through and start digging a bit deeper. I've been thinking about this subject for a while and the possible negative impact it could have on Digital Engagement. Anyway - @dominiccampbell posted a Tweet last night about a hyper-local community reporting and campaigning blog he'd foun… Continue
