Looking back at old site of mine, I came across a A manifesto for online communities, written by a group of us back in 1999, and published by the BBC as part of its Webwise campaign. It's a sort of early unofficial digital inclusion plan. Here's the summary. (I've written a longer post
Hi all
Earlier in the year I was engaged by UK online centres to develop and facilitate this digitalengagement network, so that we could report and follow through from the National Digital Inclusion Conference this summer. Thanks everyone for such terrific content.
My contract came to an end some months back, and there haven't been any offers of funding to maintain and facilitate the network. I'm now putting effort into developing the Social… Continue
We can now offer full details of the workshop being organised by DCLG and the Social by Social team in London on September 21, when programme leaders inside and outside government will get together with practitioners to discuss the use of social tech at local level.
We plan to do some mapping of who is doing what, and then generate some lively discussion about what national programmes can offer - and what help people running local communities and blogs need.
Even if you can't get to the workshop… Continue
I started up a group on this site because of interest in "hyperlocal" - the use of social tech to help people find a voice and generally do good stuff locally. That got some quick support, and in order to give us the functions we need I've now created new Ning local communities network. Do come and join us - you can use the same login as this site.… Continue
A trip yesterday to Stoke-on-Trent reminded me yet again that it's the way that individuals and groups make use of free, simple tools that brings to life the case for digital inclusion, digital mentors, digital Britain, hyperlocal ... whatever. It really shows how you can do good stuff with new stuff. The occasion was a pilot workshop run by… Continue

I just posted this over on Socialreporter, and think that the idea of an event about what hasn't worked deserves a wider airing. What do you think?
When you are starting something new the most useful stories are often honest accounts from those who have failed - as Clay Shirky said in an interview last year. Now the social media folk in Birmingham -… Continue

The blog posts today from Jo Crumplin and David Barrie confirm for me the growing interest in using blog and Ning sites for local communities. Anyone else working on that front? Is this something we should look at in more depth on this network?
The RSA is running a day's session on July 10… Continue

There's now a new way of getting blog posts on this network - by email.
It can be difficult to keep track of what's happening unless you follow by RSS (general explanation here) ... which you can do by viewing the digitalengagement dashboard here or setting up your own method of reading. Feeds links are at the bottom of relevant pages.
I've now added a "Blog posts by email" box in t… Continue
Despite there being so much still to do on digital inclusion - as Helen Milner summarises here - it's easy to forget how far we've come over the past decade.
However, I wonder if we are in danger… Continue
Digital inclusion is getting mainstream attention on several fronts ... providing an opportunity to provide compelling arguments for action to Government and other agencies. We'll shortly get the announcement of who is to be the Digital Inclusion Champion, and the final Digital Britain report, so the timing is right.
A impassioned presentation from Helen M… Continue
The RSA is following up its successful seminar on digital inclusion and social capital - reported here by Tim Davies - with practical action to support community activists who want to develop websites, It's an idea first floated by chief executive Matthew Taylor.

It looks as if there will be a major digital engagement event in July with this announcement of the Reboot Britain project from Rohan Gunatillake at NESTA:
"As summer approaches the UK is in the midst of an unprecedented economic and political crisis.
"The cumulative impact of a near-collapse of the financial system, the ongoing recession, the MPs’ expenses scandal and the prospect of… Continue
We had a lot of fun on Saturday at the SHINE09 unconference for social entrepreneurs playing through ways in which social enterprise plus added social tech could help with neighbourhood renewal. Fu… Continue

Reporting at the conference made me think about earlier discussions of digital inclusion - and prompted me to dig into my blog archives and find some talking points and provocations which I've now blogged over on socialreporter.com. Anyone else got some lists that we could pull together? Continue

While other social reporters have been using Flips and other more substantial cameras to record interviews - as you'll see in the video section here - I've had the opportunity to wander about trying out other tools I've found useful in different circumstances.
Using a mobile phone to stream video is great if you want to get something up quickly - as I did with this interview of Sion Simon by Helen Milner. More Qiks… Continue
